Your Rankings Are Fine. Your Traffic Isn’t. Here’s Why.

TL;DR:
A growing number of businesses are holding their search rankings while watching organic traffic decline. The cause is Google AI Overviews — summaries that answer queries directly on the search page, eliminating the need to click. The data in 2026 is hard to ignore, and the response strategy looks different from anything SEO has required before.
Something odd has been happening in Google Search Console for a lot of businesses this year: impressions are holding steady or even up, rankings haven’t dropped, and yet clicks and traffic are down. Noticeably.
This isn’t a penalty. It isn’t an algorithm update that hit your site specifically. It’s a structural change to how Google presents search results — and the data behind it is now clear enough that it’s hard to explain away.
The Numbers Behind the Shift
A field study published in April 2026 by Search Engine Journal — conducted by academic researchers and registered with the AEA RCT Registry before data collection — found that Google AI Overviews reduce outbound organic clicks by 38% on the queries where they appear. Zero-click searches rose from 54% to 72% in the same study.

Ahrefs data from March 2026 shows AI Overviews now appear on 48% of all Google queries — up from 34.5% in December 2025. That’s a 58% increase in three months. The rollout has extended well beyond informational queries into commercial and navigational ones. The position-one organic result loses about 18% of its clicks when an AI Overview appears above it.

The One Counterintuitive Data Point
There’s a finding in this data worth sitting with: sites that get cited inside an AI Overview see 35% more organic clicks than they would from a standard position-one result. Being mentioned inside the AI summary has become more valuable than ranking below it.
That reshapes the entire objective of SEO. The goal is no longer simply to rank; it’s to be the source Google’s AI draws from when it generates its answer. Those are related but distinct targets, and they require different strategies.
What Kind of Content Still Works
The queries most affected are informational ones. The type that AI Overviews handle well because they have a single, synthesizable answer. Informational traffic categories have seen declines in the 30–40% range on affected queries.
What holds up better: content that requires depth, specificity, or lived experience that an AI summary can’t replicate? Original data, genuine case studies, process documentation, and content that answers questions in a way that reflects real expertise — not the average of everything on the internet.
Local search is also notably less affected. AI Overviews appear in only about 7% of local searches, which means local SEO remains one of the more stable areas of organic visibility right now.

I’ve been pulling Search Console data for several of our clients this quarter, and the pattern is consistent: impressions up, clicks down. Once you understand why, the fix becomes clearer — but you have to look at the right numbers first.
